Kailash and Mansarovar

On the first day of the tour, you will take a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and Lhasa was the former capital of Tibet, now an autonomous region of China. Enjoying the beautiful aerial view of the Nepalese and Tibetan landscapes, we arrive in Gonggar Airport in Lhasa. Upon arrival, our Tibetan representatives will receive you and transfer you to your hotel room for the overnight stay.

Lhasa, as mentioned, was the capital city of Tibet, so the place is full of sites to visit, but we will only be visiting the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. The Potala Palace was the house of successive Dalai Lamas until 1959. The palace is now turned into a museum which also hosts an amazing view of Lhasa. Jokhang Temple is one of the oldest temples in Tibet that was built in 652 AD. Jokhang Temple is also one of the most sacred temples in entire Tibet which accepts worship from all sects of Buddhism. One can stroll around the Barkhor Street while circumambulating Jokhang Temple. In case we have time, we will visit other monasteries in Lhasa.

From Lhasa, we travel to Shigatse, the second most populated city in Tibet. The drive to Shigatse goes past several streams, villages, hills dotted with yak and sheep, and the locals going by with their daily lives. We will stop by the beautiful Yamdrok Lake before continuing our drive through the Tibetan terrain to arrive in Shigatse. Upon arrival in Shigatse, we visit Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas. Overnight in Shigatse.

Leaving Shigatse behind, we drive to Saga on the southern part of the country. On our way to Saga, we visit Sakya, which is home to Sakya Monastery that hosts some of the magnificent artworks of ancient Tibet. We then drive to Lhatse and passing several small lakes and villages, following the crystalline Brahmaputra River, we arrive in the town of Saga. Any last minute shopping should be done in Saga as it is the last settlement on our way to Kailash and Mansarovar.

From Saga, we will travel to Lake Mansarovar. It is 410 km and will take up to 9 hours. Lake Mansarovar is a sacred place for people following four religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. It is a high altitude freshwater lake situated on the foot of Mount Kailash (6638m). You can take a dip in the Mansarovar Lake which is believed to purify you from all your sins. You will also see another lake beside Mansarovar; it is Lake Rakshastal. Lake Rakshastal is a saltwater lake.

In the morning, you can perform a puja on the bank of Mansarovar, if you wish to. Later, we will travel from Manasarovara to Darchen. Darchen used to be a sheep station for nomads. However, today, it is a small village. It is also the starting point for circumambulating Mount Kailash (6638m). You can either circumambulate on a horse or by foot. Hiring a pony will require an extra charge.

From Darchen, we continue circumambulating Mount Kailash (6,638m). Enjoying the view of the holy mountain, we arrive at one of the stop points in the circuit in Dirapuk. We will also visit Dirapuk monastery, where Saka Dawa, a festival to commemorate Lord Buddha's life is held during the month of June.

We continue on the circuit as we walk from Dirapuk to Zutulpuk. We will get to relish the view of beautiful Dolmala-Chu Valley. We then cross Dolma La Pass (5,660m), which is the highest elevation of this trip. We will also get a view of the beautiful Gaurikunda. We then reach to Zutulpuk Monastery for our overnight stay.

From Zutulpuk, we walk further to arrive in Darchen, which is also our starting point of circumambulation. Arriving in Darchen completes our Kailash Parikrama and is the start of the end of our Kailash and Mansarovar journey. Leaving Darchen and Mount Kailash (6,714m), we drive back to Saga via Mansarovar Lake, Zhongba, and several other smaller settlements en route.

From Saga, we will travel to Kerung. Driving along the scenic Tibetan landscape, we pass Tso Drolung and the bigger lake—Palku Tso, on our way to Kerung. Then, crossing Chungkar, we arrive in Kerung. Kerung is one of the famous entry points from Tibet to Nepal.

Leaving Kerung and Tibet behind, we drive to back to Kathmandu via Rasuwagadhi. Driving past several monasteries, we enter the Nepalese side of the border in Rasuwagadhi and drive alongside Trishuli River to arrive in Kathmandu and end the trip with beautiful memories.
