The 28 days Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek takes you to the quiet and solitary terrain of eastern Nepal. First, you take a flight to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu. You then head to Illam, where you get to see vast stretches of tea gardens making up the picturesque landscape. Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek takes to the Limbu village of Taplejung, Mitlung, and several other smaller settlements, which allows the trekker to look into the Limbu culture, tradition, and lifestyle.
The enchanting areas of eastern Nepal reached during this trek offer excellent display of flowers like rhododendrons, lilies, and others. Crossing through many forests of rhododendron and passing by many rivers especially the great and mighty Tamor; the trail comes across many settlements of Rai, Limbu, and Tibetan locals.

Itinerary
After your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, we welcome you with our deepest hospitality and warmest greetings. Then, you will be escorted to your hotel for your overnight stay.
You visit the wonders of Kathmandu valley for the day. Many historic and artistically significant monuments like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple will lure you and boost your zeal for the remaining journey. Overnight in Kathmandu.
You take a short flight to reach the eastern part of the country. A 45-minute flight will take you to Bhadrapur, then, you will drive to the astonishing Ilam. Reaching Ilam takes about 4 hours. Ilam is the tea station of Nepal where you can view tea garden stretching as far as your eyes can see. Overnight in Ilam.
Leaving behind the alluring Ilam, you take a short drive to Taplejung. Taplejung is a small, traditional Limbu village situated on the hillside. After reaching Taplejung, you start your trek to Mitlung. Walking past terraced fields and cardamom farms, you follow Tamor River upstream to arrive in Mitlung. Overnight in Mitlung.
Continuing your trail through many ups and downs will take you to the Limbu village of Sinwa. After descending for some time form Sinwa, you reach another Limbu village of Tawa. Passing through beautiful rural landscape typically found in the eastern part of the country, you cross a wooden bridge over Thiwa Khola to arrive in Chiruwa. Overnight in Chiruwa.
The trail today passes through the cardamom fields. The weather and environment on the eastern part of the country favour the growth of cardamom, so many of the villages are opting for cardamom farming for their income generation. You trek along the mighty Tamor to reach Sukethum. Many uphill and downhill through several settlements like Taplethok, Temewa, and Hellok, will finally take you to Sukethum. Overnight in Sukethum.
To reach Amjilosa, you pass through dense forests alongside Ghunsa Khola. Crossing many suspension bridges over Ghunsa Khola, you leave Sukethum which lead you to steep trails. Then, after you cross the steep trail, you come across the gorge climbing which is a little challenging. Finally, after long hours of walking through the steep and rough terrain, you arrive in Amjilosa. Overnight in Amjilosa.
Today’s trek passes through dense forests of bamboo, fir, and rhododendrons. You come across small streams and many bridges on your way. After some time of ascending, you reach the stunning waterfalls on your way. Finally, after a steep ascent, you reach the Tibetan settlement of Gyabla. You can visit the monastery and temple in Gyabla, in the evening. Overnight in Gyabla.
Pine and juniper forests on the way will make you feel welcomed as you climb the trails of Ghunsa Khola to arrive in several small settlements en route. After a few ascents and descents, you arrive in the Tibetan village of Ghunsa, which houses the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area office. Overnight in Ghunsa.
You take a day off in Ghunsa to acclimatize. You can spend the day exploring the village and interacting with the locals, especially the children who are very innocent and shy but also friendly. You can also visit the ancient Tashi Choding Gumba and learn about the practices of Buddhism in the region. Overnight in Ghunsa.
Passing through alpine forests along your way, you come upon to see the spectacular view of Mt. Jannu (7710m). Further trekking alongside Ghunsa Khola will take you to a landslide-prone area past a beautiful waterfall. You then walk on the moraines of Kumbhakarna Glacier to arrive in Khambachen. You will have a panoramic view of Mera Peak (6364m), Marson (6220m), Tanga (6433m), and other snow-capped mountains from Khambache. Overnight in Khambache.
You trek through rocky fields and large boulders of the hillside situated along the riverbank. You then come upon Ramtang Monastery located next to a waterfall. After visiting Ramtang Monastery, you then walk through moraines of Kanchenjunga Glacier which finally takes you to the stone huts of Lhonak. From Lhonak, you get an amazing vista of Kanchenjunga (8586m), Wedge Peak (6802m), Mera Peak (6364), and so on. Overnight in Lhonak.
You trek along the Kanchenjunga Glacier on a steep on the slippery trail to arrive in Pangpema, alternatively known as North Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Reaching the top of KBC provides you with a great view of the Himalayas bordering Nepal-India and Nepal-Tibet. After relishing the mountain views for a while, you trek back to Lhonak for the overnight stay.
Leaving Lhonak, you retrace your way back to Ghunsa enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery. This trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa passes through glacial moraine which then meets Ghunsa Khola. You follow Ghunsa Khola downstream and walk through the alpine forest to arrive in Ghunsa.
To reach Sele La (4480m), you have to trek through steep hills. The trail passes through the dense forest of rhododendrons and junipers. After a tough climb to the top of Sele La (4480m), you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains like Jannu (7711m), Boktoh (6114m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), and so on. You climb down the pass and spend the night on the base of Sele La.
You ascend uphill with the mesmerizing south side view of Jannu Himal (7711m) and Kanchenjunga (8586m). The trail is a strenuous one as you will need to cross the pass of Sinion La (4660m). You then descend to Tseram with a view of the mountains along the Sikkim border. Overnight in Tseram.
Walking on the moraines of Yalung Glacier, you pass through Lapsang village. You may find blue sheep as you ascend to the ridge. Ascending alongside Simbuwa Khola and Yalung Glacier, you arrive in Ramche. You will get a good view of the mountains shared between Nepal and Sikkim in India as you reach Ramche. Overnight in Ramche.
Trekking to the southern side of Kanchenjunga (8586m) allows you to see the southern face of Kanchenjunga, and also get a good view of Jannu (7711m). En route to Yalung Base Camp, you visit Oktang Monastery situated on the glacier itself. Then walking on the icy ad slippery bank of Yalung Glacier, you reach Yalung Base Camp. After the excursion, you will head back to Tseram following the glacier downhill. Overnight in Tseram.
Following Simbuwa Khola downstream, you leave Tseram to reach Anda Phedi and then Tortong. You then ascend through the alpine forest towards Lasiya Bhanjyang (3310m). Passing several Chortens, monasteries, waterfalls, and small streams, you arrive in Lasiya Bhanjyang (3310m) for the overnight stay.
Descending from Lasiya Bhanjyang, you reach Chitre and then following Amji Khola downstream through the lush forest, you arrive in the small village of Yamphudin, inhabited by a mixed community of Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, and Gurung. Overnight in Yamphudin.
You leave Yamphudin and follow the trails of Kabeli Khola downstream to arrive in the Limbu village of Mamankhe. You can visit the Limbu Museum and Cultural Centre if you have time. You then continue to descend until you reach Khaksewa Khola, from where you ascend to Phumphe Danda. Overnight in Phumphe Danda.
Leaving Phumphe Danda, you first descend and then ascend to reach Phungphung Danda, which hosts a beautiful waterfall. After a few ups and downs through the forested path, you reach Kande Bhanjyang. You then descend to cross the bridge over Phawa Khola to arrive in Simbu for the overnight stay.
Trekking from Simbu to Taplejung will again require you to make few ascents and descents. You make a steep ascent at Deurali (2600m) before climbing down to Suketar, en route to Taplejung. You can spend the evening exploring the local market of Taplejung. Overnight in Taplejung.
You then drive the same way back to Bhadrapur. Enjoying the countryside view and the distant mountains, you arrive in Bhadrapur. You can explore the small town during your free time. Overnight in Bhadrapur.
A 25-minute flight will fly you above the Himalayas one last time before taking you back to Kathmandu where our office staff will pick you up and take you to your hotel. Feel free to enjoy the free time exploring the markets and food of Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Today will be your free day. You can roam the streets of Kathmandu while shopping for souvenirs to take back home to your family and friends. You can also book a one day trip inside or on the outskirts of Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.
