It is said that “the best view comes after the hardest climb,” and the trek in Makalu seems to prove it. Makalu, West Col, and Sherpani Col Trek are one of the strenuous and adventurous treks; the remote areas of Makalu region that offer mind-blowing views of the snow-covered mountains and the surrounding glaciers. Also, this trek takes you to the most challenging cliffs passes of the “Three Cols” namely West Col (6413m), Sherpani Col (6146m), and Amphu Lapcha Pass (5645m) as it traverses through the quite terrain of Makalu region to the bustling trails of Everest region.

The 29-days long Makalu, West Col, and Sherpani Col Trek are specially designed for experienced trekkers or climbers who wish to explore the wild region of the high Himalayas. The trek begins from the Arun Valley following the remote area through a forested trail filled with different trees, bushes and flowers, high alpine terrain, and beautiful farms and villages. The trekking route takes trekkers to the base of Mt. Makalu (8481m) which is the fifth highest mountain in the world.

The Camp offers an extraordinary view of Mt. Makalu (8481m) and different other mountain peaks. Trekking through the yak pastures, the route ahead then takes to Nepal’s most difficult passes: Sherpani Col (6146m), West Col (6143m), and Amphu Lapcha (5645m). Along with, the route can be challenging while crossing the steep slopes on the endless ice fields of Barun Glacier.

The top of the passes offer awe-inspiring views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6856m), Makalu (8481m), Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), and many other Himalayas. The trekking route also follows through different villages, allows the trekkers to learn the unique culture and lifestyle. Itinerary

DAY 1 Arrive Kathmandu - A & D.
We pick you up at the Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to a hotel in Kathmandu. Overnight in hotel.
DAY 2 Full Day Guided Sightseeing inside the Kathmandu Valley - A, B, L & D.
Today, we’ll spend the day visit some UNESCO world heritage sites of Kathmandu that includes Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changunarayan Temple, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath. Your guide will walk you through the history and culture behind each of these prominent sites. Overnight in Kathmandu.
DAY 3 Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and drive to Khandbari (1,040m), 2 hrs - A, B, L & D.
We catch our early morning flight to Tumlingtar in eastern Nepal. After landing, we take rest for about an hour or two then we drive to Khandbari enjoying the roadside view. Overnight at lodge in Khandbari.
DAY 4 Trek from Khandbari to Chichila (1,830m), 5/6 hrs - A, B, L & D.
For the first day of our trek, we head towards Chichila passing through the beautiful picturesque villages. We also enter the forested area filled with bamboo trees and colourful rhododendron before arriving at the Gurung village of Chichila. Overnight at Chichila.
DAY 5 Trek from Chichila to Num (1,490m), 5 hrs - A, B, L & D.
We continue our trek through densely forested trail filled with rhododendron, oak, and hemlock trees as we ascend to the top of the ridge. The trail then descends down for 2 hrs to finally reach the small village of Num. Overnight at Num.
DAY 6 Trek from Num to Seduwa (1,460m), 5/6 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Moving alongside Arun River, we continue our trek to Seduwa. After crossing the suspension bridge over the river, we ascend through a steep trail which leads us to Seduwa village with a health post and primary school. Overnight at Seduwa.
DAY 7 Trek from Seduwa to Tashi Gaon (2,070m), 5 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Today, we walk gradually through the terraced farm fields and climb uphill for an hour through the millet and rice fields to reach the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon. Upon reaching, we can explore the village to learn about their Himalayan lifestyle. Overnight at Tashi Gaon.
DAY 8 Trek from Tashi Gaon to Kauma (3,470m), 6 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Leaving behind Tashi Gaon, we head towards Kauma through rhododendron and oak forest. We also come across a summer pasture with few shepherds' huts in between. We further continue our trek through strenuous uphill climb to reach Kauma for an overnight stay.
DAY 9 Rest Day at Kauma.
To adjust with the high altitude, we take a rest day at Kauma. We can also explore the area around Kauma and visit some ancient Buddhist monasteries. Overnight in Kauma.
DAY 10 Trek from Kauma to Mumbuk (3,570m), 5 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Today, the trail follows a gradual up and down as we move further. We start to ascend through steep trail then descend downhill back to a forest full of rhododendron, hemlock, birch, and pine trees to reach Mumbuk. Crossing four passes in clouding Shipton La (4170m), we ascend slowly and arrive in Mumbuk. Overnight in Mumbuk.
DAY 11 Trek from Mumbuk to Nehe Kharka (3,000m), 6 hrs - A, B, L & D.
We continue to trek towards Nehe Kharka climbing downhill with Barun Nadi for some time. We then walk through rocky and sloppy trail as we move further up the glacial valley from where we can get the up-close view of Peak 7 (6758m). Nehe Kharka is situated on a large open grassy plain at an altitude of 3000m. Overnight in Nehe Kharka.
DAY 12 Trek from Nhe Kharka to Shershon (4,615m), 7 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Following the trail, we turn westward and walk through the forested trail for some hours. Leaving the forested trail, we continue our trek through alpine tundra from where we get the stunning view of Peak 3 (6682m), Peak 4 (6287m), Peak 5 (6432m), Peak 6 (6524m), Peak 7 (6758m), Makalu (8481), and other mountain peaks. Shershon is also the lower base camp of Mt. Makalu situated at 4,615 m. Overnight in Shershon.
DAY 13 Trek from Shershon - Makalu Base Camp (5,000m), 4/5 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Today, we gradually ascend towards Makalu Base Camp passing through the ridges and icy glaciers. Upon reaching Makalu Base Camp, we are rewarded with the mesmerizing south face view of Mount Makalu (8481m), Everest (8848m), and other beautiful mountains. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.
DAY 14 Explore Makalu Base Camp - A, B, L & D.
Waking up, we are blessed with the stunning view of Makalu (8481m), Everest (8848m), and the other Himalayas. We take a short tour nearby base camp where we may come across glacier lakes, colourful Buddhist flags, and Mani stones. We return back to the camp after our short tour. Overnight at base camp.
DAY 15 Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Hillary Base Camp.
Leaving the beautiful Makalu Base Camp behind, we head towards Hillary Base Camp following the west side path of Barun Glacier. We trek through caves, boulders, and moraines to reach the base camp. Upon reaching, we can see the breathtaking view of Lhotse (8516m) and Everest (8848m). Overnight stay at Hillary Base Camp.
DAY 16 Trek from Hillary Base Camp to High Camp.
Today, we have a steep ascent from Hillary Base Camp to High Camp. Slowly walking through the glacier and rocky path, we make our way up to High Camp. The High Camp gives us the most extraordinary view of Makalu (8481m), Baruntse (7152m), Kali Himal (6985m), Chamlang (7321m), Makalu II (7678m), Peak 3 (6682m), and so on. Overnight at High camp.
DAY 17 Rest / Extra Day at High Camp.
We take an extra day to rest for good acclimatization before the challenging climb. We spend this day relishing the amazing view of the massive mountain peaks. Overnight at High camp.
DAY 18 Trek from High Camp to Sherpani Col (6,135m), Baruntse Base Camp.
We continue to trek further to a higher elevation. The trail today follows through a steep climb up the rocky slopes of the Barun Glacier’s west bank until we reach a line of cairns which leads us to the valley where two small glaciers are fed by the slopes of the Sherpani Col. We cross Sherpani Col to arrive at Baruntse Base Camp for an overnight stay.
DAY 19 Trek from Baruntse Base Camp to West Col.
Leaving the base camp behind, we ascend on the icy snout of Lower Barun Glacier. Choosing the most appropriate route out of three separate routes, we continue to climb through the steep snow-covered slopes. We rope up to cross the glacier to the rocky crest of the West Col (6143m). We then descend from the colon fixed lines and make a stop on the moraines for an overnight stay.
DAY 20 Trek from West Col to Panch pokhari.
Today, we head towards Panchpokhari walking across the wide reaches of the upper Hunku Basin which leads us towards Kang Leyamaru. We continue to trek following the path of a rock glacier in the beginning and then towards recent moraine deposits before arriving at Panchpokhari. Overnight stay at Panchpokhari.
DAY 21 Trek from Panch Pokhari to Amphu Lapcha Cross.
Today, we trek towards the high altitude of Amphu Lapcha Cross (5845m). Keeping your safety in mind, you will use the ropes fixed by your guide en route to Amphu Lapcha for the safe descent to Imja valley. Overnight at camp.
DAY 22 Trek from Amphu Lapcha Cross to Chhukhung (4,730m), 6 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Today will be the most difficult part of our trek as we make a steep climb and then cross Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845m). We carefully and slowly descend with the help of ropes and ice-axe. The top of the pass offers the stunning view of Makalu and Everest ranges. Overnight stay in Chhukhung.
DAY 23 Trek from Chukung to Dingboche (4,380m), 5 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Today, we climb down to Khumbu valley in the Everest region. Relishing the stunning view of Ama Dablam Peak (6856m), Taboche Peak (6367m), and Lhotse (8516m), and Thamserku (6623m), we reach the Sherpa village of Dingboche. Overnight in Dingboche.
DAY 24 Trek from Dingboche to Tengboche (3,860m), 4 hrs - A, B, L & D.
Crossing a suspension bridge above Imja Khola, we continue our trek towards beautiful village of Tengboche. Later in the evening, we can explore the nearby areas including the ancient Tengboche Monastery, which is the most sacred monastery of the Everest region. Tengboche also hosts a spectacular view of the Khumbu Himalayas. Overnight in Tengboche.
DAY 25 Trek from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), 4 hrs - A, B, L & D.
We head towards Namche Bazaar passing through the densely forested trail filled with rhododendrons and oaks. Relishing the stunning view of landscape and mountains in the background, we reach Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is a Sherpa town, also known as the Gateway to Everest, and is always bustling with tourists and locals enjoying the vibrant environment along with a breath-taking panorama of Everest (8848m). Overnight in Namche.
DAY 26 Leisure Day at Namche Bazaar - A & B.
We take a day off from trekking and explore the beautiful Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar. We can stroll around the markets of Namche Bazaar, visit the locals of the town, and experience their unique culture and tradition. You can enjoy at the local restaurant or pub if you like. Overnight in Namche.
DAY 27 Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,840m), 1 ½ hrs. Fly to Kathmandu, 45 min - A, B & L.
For the last day of our trek, we head towards Lukla relishing the view of mountains in the background. Upon reaching Lukla, we catch our scenic flight to Kathmandu. Enjoying the view of the mountains one last time, we reach the domestic terminal of Kathmandu International Airport. We transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu for an overnight stay.
DAY 28 Free Day in Kathmandu - A & B.
After the long journey, we let you have a free day in Kathmandu. You can stroll around the markets to buy souvenirs for friends and family. You can also taste the varieties of food available in Kathmandu for a taste of authenticity. Overnight in Kathmandu.
DAY 29 Final Departure - B.
We drop you at Tribhuvan International Airport and bid you farewell.
