On April 25, 2015, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake, also recognized as the Gorkha Earthquake, hit Nepal without caution. Killing 9,000 people and harming more than 23,000, it is the most awful natural disaster to happen in the country since 1934. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake on May 12 was followed by an almost 400 after-shocks and still counting. Therefore, Nepal sustained a major setback caused by the loss of people and property. Rebuild Gorkha is an opportunity for benevolent people to volunteer in the earthquake affected areas of Gorkha district including Barpak. The epicenter of 2015 Nepal Earthquake.

About the Trip

Rebuild Gorkha is a 10-day trip to which starts from Kathmandu. You drive along the Trishuli River towards Dhading Besi, followed by an uneven 35km dirt road northwest to Arughat alongside Budhi Gandaki River on the bumpy trail, and hike up to Soti Khola. Later, you pass rice paddies before ascending to the attractive Gurung village of Lapubesi and then to Machha Khola. You enter the earthquake affected areas as you arrive at Gumda village. It is a traditional settlement in the hilly region. We can see the consequences of the great earthquake of 2015 in Gumda. Then you reach Laprak, the biggest Gurung village in Gorkha, which too saw heart-wrenching destruction due to the earthquake.

Later, you head to Barpak, the maximum earthquake affected the village in Gorkha district. Most of the houses in Barpak have been destroyed by the earthquake killing many humans and animals. People have been struggling to build a shelter despite the assurance of the government that has lagged in fulfilling its commitment. However, many private not-for-profit organizations have been working on the rebuilding process; so you can spend a day there volunteering in the community and also get to know about the impacts of the earthquake. On your way back to Kathmandu, you will hike until Baluwa and then drive back to the capital.

Himalayan Summit Treks and Expedition supports and promotes all reconstruction projects taking place in Nepal. One of those is the Rebuild Gorkha project. The people of Gorkha need your assistance, and we have planned a journey dedicated to supporting those enduring physical suffering and economic distress. Help people in need whilst experiencing the warm hospitality that Gorkha has to provide.

DAY 1 Arrival in Kathmandu.
Welcome to Nepal! Our office representative will receive you at the arrival section of Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, and escort you to the hotel. Get a good rest before heading out on the journey ahead. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.
DAY 2 Program briefing and preparation.
Today we will have a brief session about the essential information regarding the trek and will also check our equipment and documents required for the trek. In the free time, you can explore the vibrant markets of Thamel and Ason. Overnight at hotel.
DAY 3 Drive to Arkhet and hike to Soti Khola - 6 hrs drive, 1 and 1/2 hrs trek.
A westward 70 km picturesque ride along the Prithvi Highway via lush middle Hills leads to Malekhu. A 30 km road goes north over the Trishuli river towards Dhading Besi, and an uneven 35 km dirt road northwest to Arughat follows the Budhi Gandaki. The curvy road takes us to Arkhet via Arughat Bazaar. Upon reaching Arkhet, our trek starts right away as we walk alongside Budhi Gandaki River towards Soti Khola for the overnight stay.
DAY 4 Trek to Machha Khola - 7 hrs walk.
After having our breakfast, we move on the track that ascends slowly through lovely Sal forests. It then goes over forested trails and attached ridges past many waterfalls. The trail is narrower, at times adhering to the sides of cliffs. It later descends to pass rice paddies before ascending to the attractive Gurung village of Lapubesi. After passing a suspension bridge at the remarkable Nauli Khola falls, the gorge opens out and the track drops onto stony banks along the river before ascending to the village of Machha Khola. Overnight in Machha Khola.
DAY 5 Machha Khola to Gumda - 7 hrs.
Today we move uphill ascending with the infrequent downward walk. The trek gets exhilarating with the sight of hills and green woodland around. We walk through forests and terraced meadows until we arrive in Gumda village. It is a traditional Gurung settlement in the hilly region which has sustained significant destruction during the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. We will stay for the night in one of the villager’s house.
DAY 6 Gumda to Laprak - 4 hrs.
Today we head to Laprak, the biggest Gurung village in Gorkha district. Like yesterday, we will be walking uphill and downhill. The greenery everywhere and the charming sight of Baudha Himal (6672m) and Himal Chuli (7893m) reward us throughout the trek. Upon arrival in Laprak, we take rest and spend the rest of the day exploring the ruins of the village. We will visit the people there and provide some aid as we interact with them. Overnight in Laprak.
DAY 7 Laprak to Barpak - 4 hrs.
Our destination for today is Barpak, the epicenter of 2015 Nepal Earthquake. Barpak has seen the maximum effect of the terrifying natural disaster and has been trying to rebuild slowly. However, in spite of the destruction, the natural attractiveness of the once vibrant Gurung village remains the same. The trail is mostly demanding through a forest path by the hillside. Upon arrival in Barpak, we take rest and interact with the locals. Spend the night at a home-stay.
DAY 8 Barpak exploration.
Today we will be exploring around Barpak. We will visit the communities of the cultural groups like Ghale and Gurung. Also, there live people with another ethnicity like Sunuwar and Pariyar. We interact with the village people and witness closely their culture and lifestyle, and we try to understand how the massive earthquake has changed their lives. We will also visit the housing re-establishment area and provide the aide we've prepared for. Overnight at a home-stay.
DAY 9 Hike to Baluwa and drive to Kathmandu.
Today we move towards Kathmandu. From Barpak, we move on the downhill trail that leads us to Baluwa. From there, we take a bus to Kathmandu. We cross Aabu Khaireni to join the route of Prithvi Highway on our way back. After arrival in Kathmandu, we will drive you to the hotel so that you can rest. Overnight at a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.
DAY 10 Departure Day.
Farewell day! We will drop you at the airport before the scheduled time of your flight. We hope to see you soon.
