On April 25, 2015, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake, also recognized as the Gorkha Earthquake, hit Nepal without caution. Killing 9,000 people and harming more than 23,000, it is the most awful natural disaster to happen in the country since 1934. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake on May 12 was followed by an almost 400 after-shocks and still counting. Therefore, Nepal sustained a major setback caused by the loss of people and property. Rebuild Gorkha is an opportunity for benevolent people to volunteer in the earthquake affected areas of Gorkha district including Barpak. The epicenter of 2015 Nepal Earthquake.
Rebuild Gorkha is a 10-day trip to which starts from Kathmandu. You drive along the Trishuli River towards Dhading Besi, followed by an uneven 35km dirt road northwest to Arughat alongside Budhi Gandaki River on the bumpy trail, and hike up to Soti Khola. Later, you pass rice paddies before ascending to the attractive Gurung village of Lapubesi and then to Machha Khola. You enter the earthquake affected areas as you arrive at Gumda village. It is a traditional settlement in the hilly region. We can see the consequences of the great earthquake of 2015 in Gumda. Then you reach Laprak, the biggest Gurung village in Gorkha, which too saw heart-wrenching destruction due to the earthquake.
Later, you head to Barpak, the maximum earthquake affected the village in Gorkha district. Most of the houses in Barpak have been destroyed by the earthquake killing many humans and animals. People have been struggling to build a shelter despite the assurance of the government that has lagged in fulfilling its commitment. However, many private not-for-profit organizations have been working on the rebuilding process; so you can spend a day there volunteering in the community and also get to know about the impacts of the earthquake. On your way back to Kathmandu, you will hike until Baluwa and then drive back to the capital.
Himalayan Summit Treks and Expedition supports and promotes all reconstruction projects taking place in Nepal. One of those is the Rebuild Gorkha project. The people of Gorkha need your assistance, and we have planned a journey dedicated to supporting those enduring physical suffering and economic distress. Help people in need whilst experiencing the warm hospitality that Gorkha has to provide.
