Dolpo is an unexplored paradise of western Nepal. This remote region receives very few travelers making it one of the quietest and one of the most serene treks in Nepal. Rich in culture and bio-diversity, this region resembles the plateau of Tibet. It is also a rich Buddhist tradition place where we can see many small monasteries, Chorten and the colorful prayer flags scattered all over.

The Short Dolpo Trek entitles us to witness the magic of snowcapped peaks, quaint little settlements, and rich wildlife in this region. The biggest highlight of the Short Dolpo Trek is the Phoksundo Lake, which is a beautiful lake which is considered sacred by the Nepalese. The Nilgiri (7,061m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and Annapurna (8,091m) will be giving us their company on this trek.

Short Dolpo Trek Overview

Our journey for Dolpo Trek begins as we head to Nepalgunj followed by Jhupal. From Jhupal, the trek begins and we make way towards Dunai. From Dunai, we make a gradual ascent to Chhepka village and then to the serene vicinity around the Phoksundo Lake. The lake also holds sacred values in Hindu religion and thus is of grave importance to the trekkers and locals alike.

Dolpo region was unknown to the rest of the world until it soared into popularity when it was featured in the Oscar-nominated movie, Caravan. Though vastly beautiful, the residents of this region are isolated from the rest of the world and live in harsh conditions.

This region is the largest district in Nepal and boasts of incredibly rich flora and fauna, many medicinal plants are found in this region, such as Yarsa Gumba, which has high demand in the international market as well. The people of this region are knowledgeable in traditional medicines and use various natural techniques to heal themselves. This region almost gives a forbidden kingdom sort of feel to it and Short Dolpo Trek is an wonderful way to explore Nepal.

Itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m).
Namaste and Welcome to Kathmandu! Our officer will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. Rest of day can be spent resting or exploring the surroundings. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Fly to Nepalgunj (150m).
Today, we will take a flight to the city of Nepalgunj, which is on the western side of Nepal. This city shares its border with India and is the gateway to many trekking sites in the western Himalayas of Nepal. Local Sekuwa- a barbeque meat is a must try in this region. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.
Fly to Juphal and trek to Dunai (2,140m).
Today, we will take an early morning flight to Juphal from Nepalgunj. As soon as we fly, we will be able to see beautiful landscapes and the distinct geography of Nepal with the Himalayas towering above all. From Juphal we will make our way to Dunai, the headquarters of Dolpo region. We will meet with the Bheri River and with the magnificent view of the Annapurna massif, we will reach Dunai. Overnight stay at Dunai.
Trek to Chhepka Village (2,678m).
Leaving Dunai, we will make our way to Chhepka which will begin as we cross the Bheri River. The path continues on the banks of the river as we reach the entrance of Shey Phoksundo National Park. The path descends down as we continue further and meet small waterfalls along the way. We will see many hemp plantations along the way as we reach the village of Chhepka. Overnight stay at Chhepka village.
Trek to Jharana Waterfall.
From Chhepka, early in the morning, we will make our way towards Jharana along a path which is lined up with Cedar trees. We will be walking on pretty meadows and gradually climb up from where we can see immense gorge carved out by the river. From here, we will also be able to see a high waterfall and the Phoksundo Lake at a far distance. Overnight stay at Jharana.
Trek to Ringmo (3,641m).
Today, we will make our way to Ringmo, through the steep downhill path through forests of birch and coniferous trees. This is a beautiful path and the excitement is ever growing. As you walk along the forest lookout for many flora and fauna, which includes many pheasants, butterflies with the Kanjirowa (6,612m) giving us a perfect company. Overnight stay at Ringmo.
Hike to Phoksundo Lake (Nepal’s deepest lake) and back to Ringpo.
From Ringmo, the majestic Phoksundo Lake is just around the corner. As we reach the lake, we will be blessed with a breathtaking the view of the lake with brilliant shades of blue. Located at an altitude of 3,611m, it is the deepest lake in Nepal and is considered sacred thus not allowing visitors to take a dip in it. It wouldn't be incorrect to call Phoksundo as the identity of this region. We will spend the good amount of time here to take some beautiful pictures and then head on back to Ringpo. Overnight stay at Ringmo.
Trek to Chhepka village (2,678m).
Today, as we retrace our steps, we will pass through forested areas and make our way to the village of Chhepka, bidding farewell to the mysterious landscape of this region. The trail is steep and is mainly descent through beautiful meadows and the snowcapped mountains keeping us constant company. We can reflect upon our experiences as we reach Chhepka village. Overnight stay at Chhepka.
Trek to Juphal.
Today marks the last day of our trek. We make our way to Juphal on the similar path with birch trees and beautiful mountains towering over us. This walk will give us a sense of how life in high altitude is, just how much struggle people have to go through. We will take some well-deserved rest as we reach Juphal. Overnight stay at Juphal.
Fly to Nepalgunj and fly to Kathmandu.
Today, we take an early morning flight to Nepalgunj enjoying the view. The three distinct geographical divisions of Nepal so clearly seen below us. This is when we understand the breathtaking beauty that Nepal is. From Nepalgunj we will take a flight back to Kathmandu, enjoying similar scenes. You can shop for souvenirs upon your arrival in the city. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Departure.
You will be accompanied by one of our representatives to the Tribhuvan International Airport approximately 3 hours prior to the scheduled flight.
